Building a Strong Foundation - Without Burning Out
Yesterday, I tweeted about soft skills that are easier to develop early in your career yet can have outsized returns:
✅ Taking initiative
✅ Seeking & applying feedback
✅ Building a reputation for dependability
✅ Meeting deadlines
✅ Following up proactively
✅ Volunteering for projects beyond your core role
Some raised concerns: "Doesn’t this mean working much longer hours?"
🔹 No! it means working smarter. You don’t need to overwork yourself, but you also can’t expect exceptional growth with minimal effort.
💡 Taking initiative doesn’t mean piling on extra work. It could be as simple as identifying inefficiencies and proposing solutions. You don’t always have to implement them... sometimes, just asking the right questions makes an impact. If you do take it on, negotiate priorities.
💡 Seeking & applying feedback doesn’t require hours of reflection. It should be a continuous process within your projects. A 30-minute timely feedback session can help you course-correct early and improve rapidly.
💡 Being dependable doesn’t mean saying "yes" to everything. It means delivering quality work consistently, becoming a go-to person in some areas and setting the right expectations.
💡 Meeting deadlines isn’t about grinding endlessly. If risks arise, flag them early and collaborate with your team to adjust scope, extend timelines, or reallocate resources.
💡 Following up proactively is about keeping stakeholders informed and surfacing potential roadblocks before they become problems.
💡 Volunteering outside your core role isn’t about taking on extra work for the sake of it. It’s about being curious, learning adjacent skills, and finding opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
✔ Prioritize: Focus on initiatives that align with your interests and career goals.
✔ Communicate: Keep your manager in the loop so they support your growth.
✔ Set boundaries: Don't overcommit. Learn to say "no" when necessary.
✔ Focus on impact: Prioritize high-value tasks that showcase your strengths.
👉 Takeaway:
Soft skills aren’t about working harder—they're about working strategically to build a reputation, grow your influence, and unlock bigger opportunities.
Build a strong foundation that will pay dividends throughout your professional journey. Mastering these doesn’t require extra hours, just a smarter approach to how you work.
