Solo, But Not Stuck: My Journey as a Lone Designer

From Isolation to Inspiration—Navigating the Challenges of Being the Only Designer

Solo, But Not Stuck: My Journey as a Lone Designer

Have you ever been the only designer in your company?

If yes, you probably know how it feels to be the go-to person for everything design. Now imagine this scenario as a beginner—no team, no guidance, and everything in your hands. Sounds overwhelming, right?

I’ve been there. Starting my career as a solo designer in a fast-paced startup was a rollercoaster of challenges and growth. Here’s my story.

Starting Young: Learning Without a Map

At just 18, I landed my first role at a known company—an internship that turned into a full-time job. While pursuing my BCA degree from a distance university, I had plenty of time to dive into design. But there was a catch: I was the only designer in the company.

My tasks? Everything from creating layouts to designing social media posts.

My guide? Nobody. I had to figure things out on my own.

It felt like being thrown into water and told to swim. 🌊 I flapped in every direction, experimenting and hoping to find the right way. There were countless times I wished someone would just show me an easier or smarter way to do things.

YouTube, ChatGPT, and Endless Resources

With no peers or mentors, I turned to the internet for help. YouTube creators like Ansh Mehra and Design Pilot became my virtual teachers.

I learned Figma, Framer, Spline, Blender and what not—all through online tutorials.

But here’s the thing: the internet is overflowing with resources. 🤯

While this sounds great, it was overwhelming. Which tutorials should I follow? Which tools were worth learning? The more I explored, the more I felt lost in a sea of information.

Community Changed Everything

For a long time, I felt isolated. I didn’t have anyone to discuss ideas with, get feedback from, or even share my struggles. I messaged people on LinkedIn but all I got was silence.

But things changed when I started joining design communities and sharing my work online. Posting on platforms like Peerlist brought in feedback—sometimes kind, sometimes critical, but always helpful.

I also began connecting with other designers. Talking to them gave me clarity and helped me see the bigger picture of design. Slowly, I realized I wasn’t alone in this journey.

Challenges Every Solo Designer Faces

Through my experience, I’ve noticed some common struggles that solo designers, especially beginners, face:

  1. No Mentorship: It’s tough to figure out what’s right or wrong without guidance.

  2. Resource Overload: The abundance of online tutorials can leave you stuck, not knowing where to start.

  3. Feeling Isolated: Brainstorming and learning are harder without a team.

  4. High Expectations: In startups, the pressure to deliver quickly can be daunting.

What Helped Me Thrive

Here are a few things that made my journey easier (and might help you too):

  1. Join Communities: Platforms like Peerlist or design Slack groups are great for networking and learning.

  2. Share Your Work: Post your designs on LinkedIn or Dribbble to get feedback. Constructive criticism is your best teacher.

  3. Focus on One Thing at a Time: Instead of learning every tool, pick one or two and master them (I'm still in the process).

  4. Experiment Boldly: Don’t fear mistakes—they’re your fastest way to learn.

  5. Reach Out: Message experienced designers. Not everyone will respond, but those who do can offer invaluable advice. Use platforms like ADPList to get connected with mentors throughout the world.

From Surviving to Thriving

Being a solo designer is tough. It forces you to learn quickly, adapt, and figure things out on your own. But it’s also incredibly rewarding.

Today, I’m proud of how far I’ve come—from a clueless beginner to someone finding their way. I still have much to learn, but now I know I’m not alone.

If you’re a solo designer starting out, remember: every challenge is shaping you into a stronger, more resourceful professional. Keep learning, sharing, and connecting—you’ve got this. 🙌
