Cut Through the Noise and Master What Matters
Ever started learning something new, brimming with energy, only to abandon it halfway through? You’re not alone, this experience is almost inevitable, and it often feels like an uphill battle.
In today's rapidly evolving tech landscape, remaining relevant demands continuous learning. This often triggers a strong sense of FOMO, where you feel like you're falling behind, constantly trying to keep up with new technologies and skills, but struggling to stay on top. This overwhelming pressure can make people hop from one topic to another, without ever mastering any of them.
The Problem: What Leads Us to Drop Learning Something Midway?
The abundance of content is a double-edged sword. While it’s great to have options, too many resources can lead to feeling directionless.
I faced this when I started learning deep learning. Despite picking a highly-rated course, I got bored, and confused, and eventually quit. Further exploring multiple resources only added to my frustration. Without a clear path, my curiosity turned into self-doubt.
The Solution: Embrace Chaos, But With a Plan
One thing we know for certain is that learning can be confusing if you approach it randomly and without structure. The key is to focus your efforts and create a customized plan that keeps you on track and motivated, rather than simply following someone else's.
Start by exploring what’s out there. Initiate with areas that spark even the slightest interest. Research what those skills entail, the industries they’re relevant to, and their scope.
Now, ask yourself:
Why do I want to learn this skill?
What’s my motivation?
Write it down. A strong, clear reason will keep you driven, especially when the progress feels slow.
A clear plan can make all the difference. Here’s how to create yours:
List Key Topics and Sub-topics: Identify the essential concepts you must master.
Gather Resources: Collect top-quality courses, blogs, videos, and other materials and links in one place.
Set Deadlines: Create realistic deadlines for each topic based on your pace.
TIP: Use tools like Notion, Obsidian, or a simple document to track your progress and stay organized.
Dedicate regular time slots to learning.
Balance theory with hands-on projects.
Start small. Create small projects using your newly learned skills to strengthen your understanding and build self-confidence.
Eventually, you'll look back and see what Steve Jobs meant when he said "The dots will connect." What once felt like an intimidating skill will become second nature. This is the reward for having the courage to stay consistent.
Go ahead, and resume leveling up!
