Our Journey Through the Google Chrome Built-in AI Challenge

Recently, we participated in a hackathon sponsored by Google Chrome, hosted on Devpost for the Google Chrome Built-in AI Challenge. This exciting event aimed to develop a web application or Chrome Extension utilizing one or more built-in Chrome AI APIs to interact with integrated models such as Gemini Nano.

Opting for a Chrome extension due to simplicity and time constraints, we dove headfirst into the competition, which saw a staggering 8,669 participants. This was my first-ever hackathon, and I’m thrilled to share the journey and lessons learned along the way.

Harnessing the Power of Browser AI

Our project required us to leverage various browser AI features, including the prompt API, translator API, writer/rewriter API, language detector API, and summarizer API. These tools enabled us to build innovative features and solutions.

The Goals Behind the Hackathon

The hackathon aimed to achieve several key goals:

• Listening: We were eager to receive feedback on early-stage APIs. This feedback helps Google better understand the problems developers face and ensures the design of APIs that meet real-world needs.

• Exploring: The challenge facilitated the discovery of promising applications for built-in AI. This exploration directly informs the roadmap and prioritization discussions, with access to exploratory APIs like the Prompt API.

• Supporting: Insights and interest from participants inform discussions with other browser vendors, working towards common standards for AI integration in web browsers.

What We Built

Our project, SmartScout, is a Chrome extension that leverages built-in AI APIs to enhance your browsing experience. Here's a quick rundown of what SmartScout offers:
