Around the world, the space for dissent is rapidly shrinking. Courts, in particular, are being used as tools of oppression. By providing a neutral report of what happens in court, trial monitors can help ensure that rights are respected and abuses exposed.
This training program teaches the basics of how to be a trial monitor. It gathers all of the relevant international standards on what constitutes a fair trial.
You’ll learn, for instance, how to behave in court when monitoring a trial. You’ll also learn about when a defendant has the right to a lawyer, what the defendant has to be told about the charges against them, and how quickly they are supposed to be tried.
